 The Art Guild of Burlington offers Art Center classes for both children and adults.

Let us inspire you to draw, paint, craft and dabble in whatever art media that interests you! We strive to offer a variety of classes that will introduce you to fun, artistic experiences! Registration for class sessions begins now. Class information is also distributed through the Art Guild newsletter to members and brochures to the elementary schools.
 
 

New Classes for June and July!!!!!!!1

The Art Guild of Burlington will offer six art classes for children in June and July. Classes will be held at the Arts for Living Center, 620 Washington Street in downtown Burlington. To register, phone the Art Guild at 319.754.8069. Course fees are payable in cash or check at the first class session. Unless otherwise noted, all art materials are supplied by the Art Guild.

IN JUNE......................

Drawing and Painting
For grades 3 – 6. Learn techniques with pencil, chalk, and watercolor, working both indoors and outside. Students must bring an 11- by 14-inch sketchpad. • Eight sessions • Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: June 4 – June 20 • 9:00 – 10:15 am • Instructor: Fran Thomaston • Fee: $16 for nonmembers, $14 for members.

Pottery: First-Timers
For grades 3 – 6. Projects include sculpture, plates, wall hanging, covered boxes, and work on the potter’s wheel. Class size limited to ten students. • Eight sessions • June 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 16 • 10:30 – 11:45 am • Instructor: Lillian Rubin • Fee: $28 for nonmembers, $26 for members.

Pottery: Second-Timers
For grades 3 and up. Choose from a variety of child-tested projects or try something new. Class size limited to six students. • Eight sessions • June 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 16 • 1:00 – 2:30 pm • Instructor: Lillian Rubin • Fee: $30 for nonmembers, $28 for members.

Arts & Crafts
For grades K – 2. Projects include papier-mβchι, easel painting, clay, and collage. • Six sessions • Tuesdays and Thursdays: June 10 – June 26 • 9:00 – 10:00 am • Instructor: Suzie Johnson • Fee: $16 for nonmembers, $14 for members.  

IN JULY.................

Mixed Media
For grades 3 – 6. Activities include sculpture, clay, crayon batik, and masks. • Nine sessions • June 30; July 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 • 10:15 – 11:30 am • Instructor: Amy Smith • Fee: $20 for nonmembers, $18 for members.

Art for Fun
For grades K – 2. Work with papier-mβchι, clay, self-portraits, and sand painting. • Nine sessions; June 30; July 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 • 9:00 – 10:00 am • Instructor: Amy Smith • Fee: $20 for nonmembers, $18 for members.

Children’s classes
Children’s classes are held at the Arts for Living Center. To register, phone the Art Guild at 319.754.8069. Course fees are payable in cash or check at the first class session. Unless otherwise noted, all art materials are supplied by the Art Guild.

Children in Grades K–2

Art Exploration
Work with clay, paper, paint, printing, and more. Children can take this class multiple times — projects change each semester, and the class is a new art adventure every time! • Six sessions • Instructor: Karla Mundt • Fee: $16 for nonmembers, $14 for members. • SECTION A: Mondays, April 7, 14, 28, May 5, 12, 19 • 4:00 – 5:00 pm. • SECTION B: Tuesdays, April 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20 • 4:00 – 5:00 pm.

Bead Key Chain
Have fun with this colorful, functional project! • One session • Friday, April 25 • 4 – 5 pm • Instructor: Suzie Johnson. • Fee: $4.50 for nonmembers, $3.50 for members.

Children in Grades 3 – 6

Pottery: First-Timers
Create a variety of child-tested projects. Class size limited to six students. • Eight sessions. • Wednesdays: April 2 – May 21 • 4:00 – 5:15 pm • Instructors: Lillian Rubin and Laurie Green • Fee: $28 for nonmembers, $26 for members.

Pottery: Second-Timers
Shape ceramic projects of your own choosing. Class size limited to six students. • Eight sessions • Wednesdays: April 2 – May 21 • 4:00 – 5:45 pm • Instructor: Lillian Rubin • Fee: $30 for nonmembers, $28 for members.

Drawing and Pastel Painting
Use pencils and pastels to draw and paint natural scenes indoors and out. Students must bring a sketch pad for pastels, approximately 11 x 14 inches. • Eight sessions • Thursdays, April 10 – May 29 • 4 – 5:15 pm • Instructor: Fran Thomaston • Fee: $18 for nonmembers, $16 for members.

Junior Girl Scouts
Express yourself and have fun in a course that qualifies Junior Girl Scouts for the Ceramics and Clay Badge. Open to Junior Girl Scouts only. • Three sessions, two hours each session • Dates and times to be determined with Girl Scout leader. Contact the Art Guild for available dates. • Instructor: Lillian Rubin • Fee: $7 per student.

A limited number of scholarships covering fees for children’s classes are available upon recommendation of local school staff. Contact the Art Guild for information.

Classes for Adults
These noncredit courses are offered through Southeastern Community College. To register by phone, call SCC at 319.752.2731 or 1.866.722.4692. Alternatively, to register via email, send a message that includes your name, address, Social Security number, day and evening phone numbers, and SCC course title and number, to exted@scciowa.edu.

SCC course fees can be paid by credit card, check, or cash. Registration is not complete until course fees are paid. In accordance with SCC policy, payment of course fees must be made at least three days before the first class meeting. In addition, registrants who are not Art Guild members are required to pay a $3 nonmember fee. This fee should be paid to the Art Guild in cash or by check at the first class meeting.

Courses for adults are held at the Arts for Living Center or at Pat’s Stained Glass studio. Students should be at least 16 years old.

Pastel Painting
Work with still life compositions. A supply list will be provided. • SCC section # 11014 • Six sessions, 15 hours • Tuesdays, March 18 – April 22 • 7:00 – 9:30 pm • Instructor: Fran Thomaston • Course fee: $38, plus $3 nonmember fee.

Pottery
Learn wheel and handbuilding techniques. • SCC section # 11015 • Seven sessions, 17.5 hours • Wednesdays, April 2 – May 14 • 7:00 – 9:30 pm • Instructor: Lillian Rubin • Course fee: $59 (includes $20 materials fee), plus $3 nonmember fee.

Watercolor Painting
Develop skills in composition and techniques. A supply list will be provided. • SCC section # 11016 • Six sessions, 15 hours • Thursdays, April 10 – May 15 • 7:00 – 9:30 pm • Instructor: Ann Porter • Course fee: $38, plus $3 nonmember fee.

Figure Drawing
Work with a live model. A supply list will be provided. • SCC section # 11017 • Five sessions, 12.5 hours • Mondays, April 21 – May 19 • 7:00 – 9:30 pm • Instructor: Ben Dodge • Course fee: $62 (includes $25 model fee), plus $3 nonmember fee.

Outdoor Drawing
Use pencils or pastels. A supply list will be provided. • SCC section # 11018 • Six sessions, 15 hours • Tuesdays, May 13 – June 17 • 6:00 – 8:30 pm • Instructor: Fran Thomaston • Course fee: $38, plus $3 nonmember fee.


Classes at Pat’s Stained Glass
Glass classes are taught by Pat Latty and held at her studio north of Burlington. Course fees do not include the cost of supplies.

Gazing Ball
Transform a bowling ball. Previous glass experience is required. Supplies will be available for purchase at the class. • SCC section # 11024 • Two sessions, 6 hours • Tuesdays, March 18, 25 • 6:30 – 9:30 pm • Course fee: $22, plus $3 nonmember fee.

Glass Fusing
Make tiles, a jewelry piece, and a small panel. Previous glass experience is required. There is a supply cost of $50. • SCC section # 11025 • Three sessions, 9 hours • Tuesdays, April 8, 15, 22 • 6:30 – 9:30 pm • Course fee: $27, plus $3 nonmember fee.
