    Reading and reception...a recent event

On Sunday, November 11, Wever resident and nurse practitioner Nancy Harless read from her book, Womankind: Connection and Wisdom around the World. Harless’s book chronicles her travels and work in Belize, Guatemala, Peru, southeast Asia, China, and the former Yugoslavia — places where she discovered inspiring pockets of humanity persevering in the face of difficult, even dangerous, circumstances. The book was published in October by Tate Publishing.
Harless’s reading on November 11, at 2 pm, was followed by a reception co-sponsored by the Art Guild and the Society of Great River Poets.
Selections from the Art Guild’s permanent collection were also on view in the gallery.

Special garden party

The weather was perfect for the Art Guild’s evening garden party at the Burlington home of Betty and Ralph Guy on October 5.

Guests enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres in the Guys’ five-acre garden, with surprising features such as a tree trunk recently carved by Tim Hutchins, and there was a silent auction with artwork donated by Jena Hausknecht and Pat Latty. For most attendees, the highlight of the evening was viewing the breathtaking art inside the Guys’ home: collections of Asian, Native American, and African art as well as pieces created by Betty herself, including a Chinese-dragon rock mosaic wall, a Mayan-inspired sculpted mural, and a number of paintings and sculptures.

Betty and Ralph Guy have been longtime supporters of the Art Guild, and the opening of their garden and home for this special fundraising event was a particularly gracious gesture. Many, many thanks to them, as well as to those who organized and staffed the event, especially Deb and Dan Bessine, Monika and Rick Coursey, Marianne and Tom Darnall, and Christine Hall.
