ABOUT MEET THE MASTERS

Started more than 20 years ago by volunteers Betty Cowles and Marian Kramer who were very interested in the arts and responded to reductions in elementary art program in Burlington schools. Developed as an outreach program of the Art Guild of Burlington the goal is to “enrich the education of fifth grade students with experiences in art appreciation”.  The  MTM program promotes interest and understanding of artists’ lives in a historical context, as well as studying their techniques and works.  Each volunteer docent is assigned a school to visit once a month, presenting a “master” artist through reproductions, class discussions and hands-on projects when appropriate. In addition there is a monthly training session of approximately two hours.  We presented at 8 different sites including Burlington private schools and reached approximately 320 students this year.  With increased technology available we have developed our own power point presentations.  Burlington Fine Arts League provides grant funding for purchase of reproductions which we post in the classrooms, and special supplies.  Burlington school district also offers materials, bussing and supports the program.

We have a system of keeping one project from students at each school each year, for a May exhibition in the gallery of the Art Center as a showcase of students’ year of MTM study. This year's show opened May 11 and continued on display through May 21. MTM students were bussed to view the show and presentation by author Bob Raczka  on, May 13 & 14.
